For calling, you can use the Skype app (although for normal calls you need Skype Credits).
For texting, TextPlus is a good app that I use. I don't think people can save your number (everybody has the same #, it runs off of the app) but they can reply to previous messages.
Both of those are free apps, and require WiFi to use (of course)

There are several free txt apps in the app store, and you can use Skype for calls to other skype numbers, or , for a fee, to outside lines.

Yes. Download the Textfree app and you can text. You would have to have a microphone to talk plus a different app.h
