What are the groups or solo artists that competed with Beatles #1 hits?
The Beatles Had 20 #1 Hits in America, But what other artists could compete with the Beatles!
The Beatles averages 4 number 1 hits from 1964-1970. What other artists came close to this feat!
Elvis, Michael Jackson maybe, Mariah Carey! Let me know!
Thanks,

In terms of solo artists that would be Elvis and Mariah Carey!
As far as groups the only ones that come remotely close are The Bee Gees and The Supremes!
Of all the artists out there now,the artist that has the best chance is Mariah because she has 18 number 1 hits and has the most number 1's of any solo artist and the most number 1's of any female artist!
Now if and when Mariah breaks the record, there'll be an asterix by it considering how long it took her to do it,remember it took The Beatles a little over 6 years to get 20 number 1 singles, whereas for Mariah it's been 20 years and counting considering it took her 17 years to tie Elvis and 18 years to get her 18th number 1!

I think Mariah Carey has the best chance of surpassing the Beatles with the most #1 hits. She already has 18 next to their 20 and had already achieved 5 #1's from 1990 to 1991. She's also the only artist in the history of music to have a #1 single every year of the 1990's, and she's broken myriad records. That will be quite a day if she breaks the record of Abbey Road's finest.

In 1964 and 1965 The Supremes kept pace with 3 #1 hits each year of their own and in '66 The Beatles and The Monkees actually tied for #1 hits. ;-p
