After all my experience i have the following deductions for you:
1.Acer and lenovo are garbage
2.Dell is money waste
3.Toshiba and asus are great heavy duty laptop brands
4.Sony is a durable and reliable brand
5.Hats off for hp,they are the best laptop makers

I can't believe no one mentioned Sony Vaio. Okay soap box time. Sony Vaio is one of the best computers because the japanese do not allow many engineering mistakes. Look at Toyota, Honda, and other Japanese company that has come to america and sold products. Every company has had a higher quality level than made in America does. Secondly, read the laptop questions. There are very few that complain about a Vaio problem. Thirdly, I own one and will never buy a dell or HP again. IMO a Vaio is on the same level that a Mac is on. The top! I digress Have a great day.

To be honest most are the same. basically if you want the best battery life and a small form factor while staying powerful you should buy a macbook pro. They are pretty much the best laptops for average users. But, not everyone has 1200 bucks or more to spend. In that case there are notebooks from Dell, Asus and Sony that are great but cost much less.

Brand doesn't matter. It what's on the inside that counts. A high processor speed is good (standard is 2.0-3.0 ghz) More RAM is also better. Graphics cards are tricky to figure out. For GPU's you will have to do some research. You can also look at the different features each computer has.
If I had to choose a brand, I would go with Compaq.

There are a few but you can't go wrong with a Sony laptop. If not, Dell.

I would say it depends on what you want to do. If you are going to just word process and listen to music, Dell is your best bet. If you want to game, get and asus, as they are great gaming machines.
