it can happen but is usually only temporary. I was advised before my wisdom tooth extraction that this is one of the risks and I was asked to sign a consent form acknowledging that the possible nerve damage can be permanent. I had some numbness but it went away after about a week. Good luck to you!

Hello..If the Dentist had injured a nerve during the extraction your teeth, gums and lip would be numb beginning at the spot the nerve was injured....Not just your lip if the extraction was a wisdom tooth...You need to see your dentist for a follow up exam. Good luck and I wish you well.

The resident told me that there was a 40% chance he would hit the nerve and that my face would be numb. His attending had more experience and she made me more comfortable going in. Afterwards, she told me that she had to leave a small fragment of the tooth in there to avoid doing damage to the nerve.

Well sometimes that could happen its best to go to a doctor to get it checked out but otherwise it should wear off in about a week
