Is the deadening of the nerve before root canal supposed to hurt?
I went to my dentist to begin a root canal. The first part of the procedure is to fill the tooth with a medicine that kills the nerve. Then I come back next week for the actual root canal. But I am in serious, exclaim-out-loud kind of pain from just the deadening. Is this normal? If so, I can't imagine how bad the root canal will be!

My uncle is a dentist who has performed two root canals on myself. The first process is drilling into the tooth and extracting the actual nerve. The fact that you are having a root canal probably means that there was also infection of some sort at the site which would continue to give you pain. Secondly they put a temporary filling in the hole. So discomfort will be there a few days. Medicine, ice and heat will help. Your next visit will be the crowning of the tooth to seal the deal. Hang in there it will get better.

First of all, I don't understand why they didn't do the root canal right away and why you have to wait. I've had 6 root canals at one time, all in the same day. (It took a while, I was there all day). Secondly, if the tooth is a bottom tooth, in the jaw, they have to do a nerve block of the jaw. This is very painful, but more of a "shock". I wouldn't think you should have continued pain AFTER the initial numbing.
