Why do meat eaters troll the Vegetarian and Vegan category posting offensive answers to legitimate questions?

Update:

I'm not talking about "mom and dad won't let me go veg :(" I'm referring to honest questions about vegetarian and vegan diets that get shut down by "OMG UR STUPID u need meat 2 live!!!!!1" and other such nonsense. I don't offer advice on questions that don't concern me.

Update 2:

exsft, I don't think you even read the question. I never said that every question in vegetarian/vegan is legitimate, nor did I "resort to name-calling". Thanks for the worthless input though...

Since this is an open forum, I suppose you could consider everyone participating in the YA community to be a "troll." All of us, you and I included, look through the questions and respond to those that are of interest to us for whatever reason. If you look around the forum in general, you'll find that offensive posters are not unique to the Vegetarian section. There are a great deal of immature internet users of any age - their dietary disposition does not determine their amiability.

There is a more effective means of dealing with those who abuse YA policies. You simply report them and the comment is generally removed. No one can truly influence a person to change their behavior, that can only come from within.

But I occasionally answer questions asked in the general food section. Does it mean that I shouldn't just because I'm a vegetarian.

what makes you think that you "own" this section? The section topic is a guideline not a restriction or for your exclusive use. And what makes you think that just a post here is "legitimate" just because it came from a vegetarian or vegan?

This section is under Food and Drink". Where is your legitimate Food and Drink question? Asking a question about people about the behavior of people who eat meat in the Vegetarian and Vegan question is kinda stupid since most of the answers you will get are from vegetarians and vegans. Is it fair to ask a question about vegans and vegetarians in a steak house?

By your own narrow indeed definition, your question does not belong here either. There is a "Yahoo Answers" section where it is more appropriate. Repost it there otherwise you are as much a troll for posting in the "wrong "section" as the people you whine about.

Source(s): A sign of intellectual maturity is the ability to accept and receive opinions that are contrary to your own. Resorting to name calling is the childish infantile tantrum of a weak mind and an even weaker character.

Some folks just like to vent when dealing with some people who can be equally trollish veg*ns (usually on other sites although we have a few here too). Others have nothing better to do. Do remember that there are some folks who come here that post legitimate answers that eat meat too. I'm one of those that come here not because I care about whether someone eats meat or not, but rather the misinformation so many people have on both sides on issues like this when it comes to science, especially agriculture, nutrition, and ecology. Sometimes it is hard not to chide someone who makes really outrageous comments in those areas, but more often than not it's nice to just show what the science actually shows, and not a filtered version of through one of few polarized lens.

All in all this section isn't too bad. Not all meat eaters troll here, and those that do tend to be just a few snide comments here and there. Scram... mirrors a sentiment that a lot of other people get. Luckily the people here tend not to be as disrespectful as the veg*ans they described, but I know I have encountered quite a few in my personal life that act just like how they described. They're bad apples, but sometimes just one bad apple can ruin your appetite for any other apples around.

*Apparently one could also ask why legitimate respectful answers are all of sudden getting almost instant low ratings.

Honest answer-- because many vegetarians have gotten in my face over the years about my consumption of meat, and they like to act very self-righteous about their habits, even though oftentimes they know very little about ranching or hunting.

You can look at my some of my other posts and see how my grandfather runs his (small) ranch. He treats the cattle as humanely as possible, giving them free range and only selling to slaughterhouses that are owned by other families we trust not to treat the animals poorly before they are processed. All too often, vegetarians lump people like him, who are doing the best they can with limited resources, in with the big factory farms, who are steadily squeezing people like him out, with their inhumane conditions and crowded animal pens, which they use to increase their profit margins.

So there you go-- vegetarians all too often don't see the difference in the meat you get from a small-time rancher you know, and the giant factory you don't. Oh and ugh, don't get me started on what they say about hunting. I've never hunted an animal I didn't eat or donate to a local food bank (except snakes, and those are just incidental when I'm fishing or after wild boar or deer), and I've never killed an animal for sport. I've only ever shot a few deer because I find them quite beautiful, but I have no issues with killing feral boars, which are A) highly aggressive, B) non-native and destructive to native species, and C) highly destructive to property.

In the end, if people didn't get in my face, and if they understood more of the reality of ranching (the good guys getting squeezed out by the big factories), I would probably respect Vegans and Vegetarians more. As it is, I don't feel like they understand where I'm coming from, and it makes me tune them out.
