why do people paint trees white up so many feet?

what is the deal with it??? why do they do it???

    it could be for decorating or just to be able to see them in the dark !

    Bug repellant. Makes no sense to me either. You plant a tree. It either lives/dies. It dies, you plant a different tree. That's why you see so few painted white. Somebody REALLY wants that tree to live.

    To reflect sun so the bark does not heat up and split.

    I believe it keeps it from growing too large and it also keeps bugs away.
