You can erase the old disk and use it on your Dell without any difficulties.
What you can't do is attempt to restore your system from an HP disk onto a Dell. There's enough differences in hardware that the restored system won't work.

It may work but there will be errors in the system as the back up will install the drivers and service information for a Dell and not the HP
I think you can get the restore disc from HP
