What computer does a college student need?

I'm currently looking to buy a desktop computer for my home. I'm a college student and i pretty much only use the computer to write papers, work on files, powerpoint, go on the internet and stuff like that... (no video games)... What computer would be best for me as far as RAM and all of those numbers? When i go into bestbuy or a store i dont know what all of those numbers mean.

Fist of all if you ask this question 1 year ago the specs would had been in half , because gadgets and computers are overwhelm very fast in those days.

But still you must have a computer that over 3 years will still be able to run applications of that time.

These days, $500 to $1,500 will net you a desktop with a dual-core CPU and enough power to run productivity apps, view and edit vacation photos, manage MP3s and videos, and even play many of today's games--the core activities most common to families, students, and the general purpose PC user. At $1,000 and up, you should easily be able to perform those tasks. Spend around $500, and in most cases you'll still be able to run common tasks without delay, although 3D gaming becomes a stretch.

Quad-core CPU (Intel Core 2 Quad, Intel Core i5, AMD Phenom II X4, AMD Athlon II X4) or Dual-core CPU (Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, AMD Phenom II X2, AMD Athlon II X2)

    4GB to 8GB of DDR2 SDRAM or DDR3 SDRAM

Integrated graphics chip from Intel, ATI, or Nvidia, or discrete ATI or Nvidia graphics card with 256MB to 1GB of video memory

    500MB to 1TB hard drive

    Dual-layer DVD burner

    DVD burner

Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) or Mac OS X Snow Leopard (windows XP will loose support in 2011 meaning no upgrades. If we pay something let's pay something that is worthing 5 years from now)

Computer people will try and get the most money out of you by saying "Upgrade this and upgrade that" until eventually you've spent £200+ on upgrades you didn't even need. You said a Desktop so I assume you have a budget of £600. You want this.

    Processor 2Ghz - 2.5Ghz intel i3 or i5

    RAM 2GB - 4GB

    Operating system XP or 7.

    Hard Drive 250GB+

That's pretty much all you need to know.

As far as I think I would suggest that you should get this Refurbished Hp or Dell laptop which is really excellent and amazing too.

These Refurbished laptops are really superb and fantastic too. They are indeed reliable and durable too.

Get an Acer or Toshiba. Dell's and HP's are too easy to break and too costly to fix. Acer's and Toshiba's are more durable, faster, and easier to fix.
