Why are derailleurs sometimes referred to as "mech"?

I've heard people refer to the front or rear derailleur as front or rear "mech?" Where does this come from? Is this a Euro thing or something?

Mainly British, strangely enough, North Americans use the French term

It's short for "mechanism" as in the mechanism that moves the chain across the sprockets or chain rings. It is used to refer to front and rear changers - "front mech" or "rear mech"

I have always just understood it to stand for 'mechanicals'. In thinking of a bikes history, all at once these mechanical devices were added... thus "mech"...
