Should I go to New York City for college?
I have always wanted to move to NYC and go to college there. I currently live in Denver, Colorado and I am an undergrad freshman at the University of Denver. Originally I wanted to go to New York right out of high school but then was talked out of it by my parents ( they don't like how far it is and think it's dangerous). Now I hate the college I attend because it is not diverse at all and the campus doesn't really fit me. So the questions I have are as follows:
1. Is New York a pretty safe place to live?
2. I would like to go to a college that has dorms, is fairly active and diverse, any suggestions? My grades are pretty good too. Also, I come from a lower middle-class family and have financial need so I want a college that is either inexpensive or gives a good amount of institutional aid.
3. I am undeclared but am looking at majoring in something related to Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences, so any colleges that have really good programs in these fields would be great.
4. Also, is there any advice you can give me about the city itself ( entertainment, safe and not so safe areas, how to get around, how to save money etc).
5. Last, is NYC a good place for a 19 yr. old college student who wants to experience life but is not fully independent yet?

Not too sure how long ago your parents talked you out of enrolling in a New York City college but as of November 2010 and a few years back, New York City has been pretty safe. Of course there have been crime related issues but crime in New York City is not on a large scale. 1. It is safe to live, it's not too late to apply.
2. Any New York City college that has dorms available will have a diverse student population because after all, this is New York City. Some colleges do not have dormitory available, so you might have to find an apartment to rent. I know NYU has a department that helps anyone in need of financial aid apply, you should contact the college you are interested in and inquire.
3. NYU
4. Use the subway system, it's the fastest, best priced and connects you almost everywhere in the City. In terms of entertainment, you will not be bored, there's everything to do here from trying dishes of various nations to diverse music, museums, parks and theatre. Even into the late hours. Food can be expensive if you eat fine. If you're looking for a budget, there are cheap food vendors here in addition to the quality restaurants or find a local market and cook at home.
5. Yes, NYC is a good place for a 19 yr. old college student who wants to experience life but is not fully independent yet. All you have to do is get accepted into a college of your choosing, find a place to live and bring a small savings.

Sorry you hate your college but here is what I know.
1. For any city including NYC it depends on the area you are in so if you are in a decent are no it is not dangerous.
2. A friend of Mine went to a place called The New School which I think sounds really good for you. It is very diverse and has an independent, worldly, and artsy vibe to it. She is on financial aid and she told me it was pretty easy to get. And she also loves it.
3. The New School and NYU.
4. Don't go near Bronx and you defiantly need to experience the amazing shopping, shows, and food that the city has to offer. I also say maybe get a part time job while you are there to help pay for stuff.
5. For experiencing life yes but for not being fully independent no.
