Why would a chipmunk jump a dove?

I just saw a chipmunk jump and tumble with a dove. I just can't understand why that behavior would happen. Wish I had had a camera on it.

Update:

The dove did not run away.

They are competitors. They both eat seeds. Usually a bird is wary of anything that may attack it and will get out of the way before physical contact. Squirrels will chase away birds such as the Steller's jay, which may steal the food a squirrel buries in the ground.
