The emission spectrum of any atom consists of discrete lines, rather than bands. This is because the electronic energy levels are quantized - that is, they each can only have 1 energy value. The emission lines result from electrons dropping from a higher energy level to a lower energy level and giving off the difference in energy between the two levels as light. The light from each of these transitions can only have discrete values because the levels themselves have discrete values.
