The bare bottom tanks are needed for breeding discus or it helps you keep the discus's water cleaner like both answerers above me said. However, if you know how to keep the water in check and do regular maintenance then there's no need for a bare bottom tank.
Just a month ago I got my first discus too. She was 5 inches big though and she wouldn't eat for about 4 days. I suggest using something tasty to entice the little fish to eat like frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp. It quite possible that where you bought it from they were feeding them live food so now it'd rather have live food instead. (That's what happened to me. My discus was spoiled.)
Unless they were also feeding them flake food in the place you bought the fish from. Then double check that the fish doesn't look physically ill and give it more time to settle down. Discus do go on hunger strikes, but it will come around as long as it is healthy. (Oh and make sure your water parameters are fine because if they aren't then that may be why your fish isn't eating.)
Good luck with your fish! =]

they need very very clean water. A bare bottom tank makes it easier to accomplish that. they need small peacfull tankmates. they do best in groups of 3-10 a 55 one discus has the potential to outgrow a 55 gallon tank, as the can grow to 15 inch discs. but gourami angel fish and rainbow sharks are not suitible tank mates for discus, as they are to active and too aggressive, and could easilly stress them out. Depending on the filter, your cleaning schedual, and the species, the pleco may contribute too much to the bioload in the tank, possibly adding more waste than you can remove. Discus prefer temperatures of 90-92 degrees, and a Ph. no higher than 7.2 If you have a higher ph, that could be why he is not eating. he might eventually adjust , but you will need to make quite a few changes if you want him thrive and survive to adulthood.

If she is twelve spanking in all threat won't artwork besides. attempt organic effect. to illustrate, If she needs to stay wakeful till 3am, make her arise for college a nil.5 hour early day after right this moment... quickly she'll be too drained and supply up her previous due bedtime. If she refuses to devour her dinner and demands something else, tell her no... deliver her to mattress hungry and have the dinner from final nighttime waiting for her as breakfast the subsequent morning. issues like that often do the trick greater useful than hitting, yelling or maybe removing possessions. good success.
