Have you ever been cheated at the Gas Station?

I was truly pissed yesterday. I stopped at a local gas station and asked for $20.00 of gas. The proceeds to pump in the gas, then I look around to the pump and its going over the $20 request. I yell hey stop I asked for $20 only. He proceeded to argue with me saying I said fill it up. He refused to admit that I said $20. I wound up paying $35.00. This really made me angry, because I drive a really nice car and I am wondering if he thought he could get away with it because of that and that I am a woman. I continually called him a cheat, which seemed to anger him. I paid, but what if I didn't have the money? Is there anyway to prevent such things from happening? Who do you report this behavior to?

Update:

In reference to smells like comments.

I didn't pump the gas he did. He was the one wandering about. We are not allowed to pump our own gas.

I thought I had been a few years ago. My situation differs from yours though. My husband and I were short on money constantly at the time and I thought I had gotten less gas for what they had advertised the 'per gallon' amount for so I reported the station to the department of weights and measures.

    You were not cheated.

As the little sign says, you are supposed to watch the gas pumping, not wander about. You have no "right" to wander about trusting that the pump will stop or not spill gas all over the parking lot. Part of pumping your own gas is that you are responsible for pumping it.

You pumped 35, you paid for 35.

As if this was a vast conspiracy to collect an extra 75 cents from you (which is about twice the estimated average amount the guy made on the extra sale.) You're under a delusion that there is a huge mark up at the gas station on gas.

If it was one of those local owner operator stores, then yes, he was probably trying to cheat you. Even if you said FILL UP, you only handed him a $20 bill to begin with. If it ever happens again, I would call the police and just tell them the situation, explain to them that you have no more money, and you gave the guy a $20 bill and he purpously let the pump keep going. If the police say pay the man, then pay him. But what this will do, is if other people experience the same problem, and they voice it, the guy can be shut down eventually.
