Most places would not rent you a bike as the insurance in case you injure yourself would be too much to bother with and especially for racing mx every bike needs to be set up for the rider.
I don't think there is a huge difference between ski and bike goggles perhaps the lens is different and maybe the shape as they have to fit a helmet. Never tried to ride with ski goggles so can't really give too much insight into that one.
Learning is much the same as any other sport and it depends upon how you progress yourself and if you have any natural ability.
If you don't want to race then a basic trail bike like the crf150f or klx125, ttr125 would be good but these bikes are not suited to race mx on. Great learning bikes though.
As long as you purchase a comfortable boot and a new helmet or fairly good quality you will be fine. The best boots and helmet would set you back hundred and if not over $1000 in the country I am in and while great not necessary for a beginner. So just try them on and get some advice from a salesperson with knowledge.
Leatt make a good neck brace and so does Alpinestar with their bionic brace and if buying a brace it is then wise to take that along to find a chest guard that fits comfortably with the brace.
Yes dirtbikes can be dangerous and the sport of mx and sx very dangerous but if all the safety gear is used and you also use your brain you have less likely-hood of having a bad stack. People do die but not too many raw beginners die as they are usually not going fast enough to do enough damage.
Just try gloves on as what one rider likes another doesn't.
No you don't need special socks many use them as they find them more comfortable. If you find your pants rubbing invest in either some skins for underneath the pants or if you don't have the funds for that then just get a pair of ladies leggins or footless tights to wear underneath.

i would suggest starting off on a 125 or 150 of any brand, they are extremely light but will still give you a good amount of power. and i know of a place where you can rent one if u live in cali, dirt bike goggles ar gunna be enginered to withstand more torture do to the fact that you will have more speed on a dirtbike, and good dirtbike goggles have nose protectors too cuz u dont want a rock to come flyin up and hittin u in the nose. i really dont have a preference of hemlets or boots but when it comes to helmets, get one thats more expensive, shoei is a good brand, for chest protectors and that kinda stuff go with alpine star, and yes, these bikes are very dangerous, other than broken bones u could be burned from the engine and exhaust, and im pretty shure theres a million other bizare things too, and u should wear dirtbike socks since they are thicker and offer better protection against the heat of the engine

no you cant really rent one, you have to buy one. ski goggles usually have tint and dirbike goggles are clear and they have little things on the lenses for tear offs. it is easy to learn if you pick the right bike. i would suggest like a yamaha ttr 125 or honda crf150f, those are trail bikes and really easy to learn on. i would not recommend learning on a motocross bike. there are a lot of good helmets and boots and you dont necessarily need the best to be protected. for helmets you just want them to be snell and dot approved; if they are approved by both of them then its a good helmet. the best boots are garne and alpinestars but again you dont need the most expensive ones out there. good neck brace is the leatt brace (i have one). maybe think about a chest protector too. yes you could get hurt but thats why you ride within your limits and it gets dangerous only when you start motocross with jumps and going fast. you can get any type of gloves. you can get riding socks but they are not necessary. hope this helped. (id learn on a trail bike (cheap) and then if you like it and want to get into motocross then buy a motocross bike)
