Microsoft Security Essentials no icon in tray?
The icon appears on the desktop but I still cannot open it to scan etc., either from the desktop or from All Programs. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program with no improvement.

Congratulations! you got yourself a good virus! Once a real virus runs it's course, it will keep antivirus programs from working correctly. The best way to deal with it is to have a disk with an operating system and virus software on it, boot from it, and scan without the desktop o.s. being active, but most people don't plan for that, so a re-install would be easy, or take it to a repair shop so they can remove virus' and keep your 'important' files safe.
