Help crocheting a hat- can you explain this direction?
I am trying to crochet an ear flap hat but I am stuck on a row. I don't understand one of the directions and I'm getting really frustrated. Please help. I know what the abbreviations stand for, thats not my problem. My problem is I don't get what they mean. Here is what it says:
ch-1 sp. ch1 turn, sc in first sc, (ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc) across.
Ok, my main problem is "sk ch-1 sp" which means "skip chain 1 space". What does that mean? How do you skip a chain space?
Please help, explain as much as you can. I've tried starting this hat at least 6 times in the past 5 years and cannot get past this on row.
Please please help
Thank you in advance!

In the last row, you put a chain stitch between two other stitches. This created a small hole. That hole is called a ch-1 space. So instead of inserting your hook into a stitch, you insert it into that hole. Except in this case they are telling you to skip that ch-1 space. So skip it the same as if it was a stitch. Skipping just means you don't work a stitch in it and instead move on to the next stitch in that row (the last row you made).
