Physics Question (Probably Easy)?

Ok, So a person is being lifted vertically upwards by a rope.

the mass of the person is 72kg and the upward vertical acceleration is 1.4 m/s/s calculate the tension in the rope

Best answer provides the answer and how to do it (in simple words) Thanks ¦:¬)

    Consider the forces on the person being lifted. Tension upwards and Weight downwards.

    Since the person is being lifted up, T>W

    According to Newton's second law and making upwards as positive,

    T-W = ma

    T = ma - mg

    = (72)(1.4) - (72)(-9.81)

    = +807.12 N

    Note:

    1) A positive force of +807.12N means tension is acting upwards.

    2) -9.81 is used rather than +9.81 because we take upwards as positive. Since acceleration due to free fall is always acting downwards, a negative 9.81 is used.

    3) If you do not take the directions into consideration, you'll end up getting +605.52N/-605.52N, which is wrong.

    Ya so what you got to do is to identify the forces; that is the upward tension on the rope and downward weight of the man. find the force that if mass times acceleration which equals to 100.8N then to find weight multiply mass by g (9.81) which equals to 706.32.So tension equals the weight subtracted from the force which is 605.52N which is the tension

    Tension=m(g+a)

    =72(9.81+1.4)=72x11.21=807.12 N

    Since it is moving up with acceleration,

    T = mg - ma

    =>T = m[g - a]

    => T = 72[10-1.4]

    =>T = 72*8.6 = 619.2N

    hope u understood
