I have a Golden Retriever and of course, he sheds.?

Can anyone recommend a really good brush or grooming tool of any kind to help with this issue? I try to brush him everyday but it almost seems like this makes it worse by loosening even more hair. Are there any special shampoos for this? Any advice would be appreciated.

You need a slicker brush with long soft pins (metal bristles). You need to brush every day while the dog is shedding. You must clean the brush out often as you brush the dog. A wide tooth comb (or your fingers) will work for this. You will notice that you get more hair (fur) from some areas than others. This is because the whole body does not shed at once, it does a section or two at a time. Brushing doesn't loosen hair. It removes loose hair that is going to fall out (or already has but is caught in the coat) any way.

I have tried virtually everything on the market, as both a professional pet groomer and having owned 5 large shedding dogs and several cats, all at the same time. A thorough daily brushing is what works. If you want to remove the undercoat faster, there are a variety of coat rakes you can buy inexpensively. You brush, then rake. Or just brush. The Furminator and special shampoos (there are many) don't work at all well, in my experience, compared to daily brushing. Some dogs will tolerate being vacuumed and there are attachments made specially for dogs.

If you want to speed up the shedding process, have your dog bathed once a week. Be warned that a weekly bath will make your dog shed about ten times as much (or it will SEEM that way) all of the time until he is done shedding. A weekly bath done with very mild and gentle, hypo-allergenic puppy shampoo will not harm your dog or his coat.

You can find a lot of grooming supplies, including the ones I have mentioned, online at places like Pet Edge, Ryan's Pet Supply, Jeffer's Pet Supply, K V Pet Supply, and others. These are the places I shop at. You might have other favorites. Pet Edge claims to have the lowest prices.

Nothing will eliminate shedding completely and you will always have some pet hair around as long as you have pets BUT feeding your dog an essential fatty acid supplement that contains the fatty acid, linoleic acid will also help some. Linatone Plus is one brand.

I suggest that you invest in the Furminator. It is not cheap but it will be your best friend. The prongs of the Furminator are able to reach down into the undercoat where much of the shedding occurs and gets the loose hair out. It comes in several sizes to accommodate different size dogs. They also have separate tools for long-haired and short-haired dogs. The Furminator company also makes special dog shampoos that help with sheddng problems.

I also have a golden retriever hints my screen name ( golden gurl ). and yes of course i have the same problem, i use the evolution de-shedding brush and it seems to work miracles! I got this at Tractor Supply Company for 14 dollars & you can probably get it at Petsmart but expect to pay more for it. It is amazing how much hair i get off of her, and now she hardly sheds at all. I brush her out almost everyday & wash her every 2 weeks or so with FURminator deShedding Shampoo and this also seems to help!

    hope this helps:)!

I use a Mikki Undercoat Rake on my Goldens plus the Mikki Slicker Brush daily and these do help to keep the shedding at bay.

I tried the Furminator but I found that it ripped the fur and it took a very long time for their coats to return to their former glory.

What will help more is making sure he is on a good food free of wheat, corn or soy. Add a teaspoon of Olive Oil to his food twice a week. Brush every day for a couple of weeks and then twice a week.

I use i really cheap not fancy comb. You can get anywhere pretty much. Its just one of those black tooothed, plastic combs that are probably intented for humans. I get mine at target in the hair section.

I use mine on my golden and newfie and it works great! Its not too fancy and isnt expensive a all.
