Dumb question maybe, but why would I want Skype on my new Android phone?
Brand new Android smartphone user here. Sorry if this is dumb.
I can call any cell or landline phone I'd ever need to for free. Skype to Skype = free doesn't seem to be of any benefit. Am I wrong? Is it so you can make calls when there's no cell phone signal, via VOIP?
What is the advantage of having Skype on my new Android? Thanks!

Does your new phone have a forward facing camera? If so, then you can use Skype to make video calls wherever you are. There is a benefit. It also allows you to keep in Skype IM communication with anyone you would have on your Skype contact list, from your phone. It also allows you to have a one way Skype Video call if you don't have a forward facing camera... you could see your wife and kids on the road if you are away from home for a while, even if they can only hear you.
So... there are multiple uses.

Not much. It is cheaper to make calls internationally compared to what your carrier would charge. Skype uses your phone's internet connection instead of the actual cellphone signal. That's why it's so much cheaper, it's all done through internet. If you don't have a cell signal, you won't have a data signal either though.
