My father and his 8 yr old daschund have lived with us for over a year now.?

The problem is this dog barks at nothing all day long. He can be sound asleep and will suddenly lift his head, look around and bark. He will bark when the entire house is dead quiet. He barks when a phone rings and he barks if no speaks for a while and suddenly starts talking. He also barks if you say HI or Hello! Could it be his hearing? It seems like he's hearing things that aren't there! If I walk out the door to the mailbox he barks at me. When I come back in the house from the mailbox he barks at me again. This dog is about to put me over the edge! Any suggestions???

How about a nice retirement home for your dad and his dog?

Try not to let an aging dog that barks get on your nerves. Think of something else. Do something else. Ignore the dog. Buy some ear plugs. Talk to your Dad. If the dog barks a great deal, maybe a citronella spray collar would be just what is needed. It would limit the barking and not harm the dog. You can buy one at www.petedge.com

If you really want to stop this behavior get ready to put in lots of time and effort. EVERY TIME he barks you will need to correct him. snap your fingers, point, make the same noise, shake a can full of pennies, something. This takes lots of time and effort and you have to be consistent. If you only correct him sometimes the dog will get mixed signals and just be confused, not helping you at all.

Check out Ceaser Milans website, he has lots of great tips on dog training.

if you want immediate results you can get him a shock or spray collar that will either shock or spray him in the face when he barks. they sell these at most pet stores or farm supply stores.you can also train him to be quiet, but with this dog being old and very very barky this may be hard and time consuming although this is what i would most recommend, if you are still interested in teaching him how to be quiet then go to this website to learn more: http://www.placervillevet.com/training_your_dog_to...

    good luck!
