    Dear Volunteer Teacher,

Hi, I’m Ken with the Home Depot in California. Cleaning grout has never been a fun job with all that scrubbing, but can be made easier. There are several ways to clean grout depending on how dirty or stained it is.

For starters you can use equal parts of vinegar and water. Using a scrub brush, dip the brush in the solution and scrub in a circular motion, then rinse. To clean stubborn stains use baking soda, and a little water and make a paste. Use a sponge to apply the paste then scrub again in a circular motion and rinse. For really hard stains on grout, you will have to use a commercial cleaner. There are several types of grout cleaners. Some are Eco friendly and others more industrial. These are readily available at most home improvement centers.

In cleaning a grout on your bathroom tiles, just try to use this simple solution prepare for a baking soda, when made into a paste with a little water or vinegar, baking soda is a terrific grout cleaner. Just dab it on, scrub in circles, rinse and dry. For a better cleaning, try leaving the paste on for a few minutes before scrubbing. You can also make a paste with 1/3 each of baking soda, salt and vinegar. The addition of salt helps the cleaner get into all the little crevices and spots that may be in the grout. Be sure to rinse and dry when you are done.

Scrubbing with a brush will remove the grout. Put on rubber gloves, Take a spray bottle and fill with undiluted bleach. Turn on a fan for ventilation and spray the tile and grout very quickly while holding your breath. Leave the area for 15 minutes. Return and wash the bleach off the walls. Viola the grout is clean and the tile is also clean.

Oxygen bleach is a cleaning product that is made of hydrogen peroxide and soda ash. The product is activated when it is mixed with warm water. The oxygen ions in the bleach attach to stain molecules, breaking them down into small pieces that can be wiped away with little effort.

Try some oxiclean and a little steel toothbrush. Add some oxi clean to a pint of water, and dab it on the grout, and let it sit a while.

Have a toothbrush dripping with vinegar and apply a little pressure to the joints when cleaning and it will wash away the dirt and grime then rinse afterwards ok.
