How to Tell If Your Hair is Healthy?

I cut my hair really short in the beginning of this school year (to my ears, yikes!). I've noticed that all my friends who cut their hair have grown it out at least a good 4 inches it looks like. My hair has grown maybe 1/2 an inch. I am african american and most of my friends are white and indian (maybe its a genetic thing?) and I get trims about every 4 weeks. I also straighten my hair at 300 degrees once a week.

So how can I tell if my hair is damaged or not? Or if its healthy? And how come its not growing. It should be longer by now.

Update:

PCM: Thats kind of funny because both of my parents are from Ghana.

Everyone's hair grows different, if you use heat protection spray when you flat iron it i'm sure its fine,

my hair grows super fast, i'm mixed korean and white, my white friends hair grows super slow, probably slower than yours but its not really race i don't think, maybe ask your hair dresser if its healthy?

if its super bad damaged you will be able to tell by looking at it - split ends, frizzy, dry etc.

Ususally people of African decent take a while to grow their hair compared to most other ethinic groups. I had a friend from Ghana and her hair never grew long so she would wear hair extensions most of the time.

    Do you have split ends?

If not, your hair is healthy.

    It might just be genetics.
