Why is that people who answer questions are afraid to get a response?

That is from the person who asks a legitimate question and is searching for sensible alternatives and discourse. They don't accept emails, etc.

    Possibly because they see it as going beyond the Q&A format. The main intended function of Y!A is that you ask a public question, and others offer public answers to it. There's no obligation for anyone to carry on "discourse" after that.

    Some people just don't want to be bothered; maybe they've had problems in the past with harassment, and so don't want any contact with other users besides the Q and A in the open forum. I personally don't mind receiving emails, because you can easily ignore them if for some reason you don't want to respond, but the IM function is a giant pain.

    Probably because they think it is creepy to be contacted via email instead of in this forum.

    Because they do not want personal contact with strangers.
