I'm so sorry about your mom. My dad has diabetes also and I remember how worried I was when I found out about it. As far as your chances, it depends on what type she has, like the nurse said. Type 2, you can try and prevent. Eat healthy, exercise, and just be aware of what the symptoms are to watch for. If you start loosing or gaining a lot of weight without meaning to, get really thirsty, have to pee like every 20 minutes, are in sorta a bad mood, and stuff like that, you should be tested also. Diabetes is totally manageable and people that have it can live totally normal lives. My dad's had it for almost 8 years now and I almost forget about it because he handles it so well that it's never an issue. Good luck and God bless! :)

I'm sorry to hear that about your mom. It must be scary for you.
As far as your chances of developing diabetes, it kind of depends on whether she has been diagnosed with type I or type II. The best thing you can do to reduce your risk (if she has type II), is to maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, eat well-balanced meals (high-fiber, low refined carbs/sugar) and follow up at least yearly with your doctor for bloodwork and an annual exam.

I'm sure you can still prevent diabetes because in your family, there is only few people had it (not because of genetic factor). With healthy lifestyle (exercise regularly, body weight management), you must not be a diabetic in the future time
