High school student needing help preparing a resume for first summer job.?
I am 16 years old, a female junior high school student. I am looking for a summer job but have no related experience in any sort of sales, retail, food, etc. industry. Last summer I worked filing papers and such for an office, but seeing as it was a temporary position (3-4 months during the summer) I don't know if I should mention it, for fear of appearing unreliable. I don't play sports or hold any leadership positions, but I have above a 4.0 GPA, am currently taking several AP and honors classes and I've played piano for 10 years (consistently taking and passing piano exams each year). Sorry for the long description, but how can I use this in a resume? What should or shouldn't I include, and how should I go about applying (where, when, how, hints, tips, etc.)? I'm really nervous as this will be my first major summer job. Thank you so much for your help!

preparing an actual resume might not be necessary. Definitely mention your summer job, because it is ALWAYS good to show you have experience, any kind will do. When you apply for a new job, they usually ask why you left the other one, so that's when you explain that it was meant to be a summer job etc. Now, if you are applying to fast food joints or a grocery store, a resume will not be necessary. These places will give you a job by a simple interview process. Chances of getting a job here is also almost 100% since these places are always hiring. If you are applying for a job as a part time receptionist, or a dietary aide (great option btw), then a resume will be helpful. Since you are still young, your resume will consist of your educational background, state your expected graduation date, GPA and the relevant classes you are taking (relevant to the job you are applying for that is). So if you are applying for dietary aide for example, a relevant class you might have taken for it in high school would be nutrition. After educational experience, list your work experience, including the dates you worked and your duties at the workplace.
After that list whatever organizations you are part of (kiwanis, school newspaper..etc), and talk about your positive traits (people person, good with Microsoft Office etc). Then very briefly mention your hobbies or favorite activities (you should mention your piano experience here). List 2 people who aren't related to you as references and provide their contact information. I suggest using one of the ready made resume templates on Word and editing it to fit your needs. Now if you are applying places online, it is ALWAYS a good idea to still somehow talk to the employer, you can do that by either going in, or just calling to check the status of your application. No matter what employers say, these things DO affect their decision.
Since you are honors student and stuff, I will assume you are getting a job to save up for college? Or maybe get a new car? (hey, you also are 16 ;) ) whatever it is, good luck !

First jobs can be kinda tricky. Many employers do look for experience, and also how old you are. As far as a resume...I really wouldn't even bother making one unless they require it. Usually, a simple application will do. If they don't give you a call about an interview within a week or so, give them a call to check the status of your application. That is so important. Usually for summer job, employers will recieve many applications a day and yours will just get lost in a pile. When you call..they will find your application and take a look at it. Now your application is ahead of all the others! Also, employers like that you show interest in the job. As for the interview, since you have no experience with a job, talk about your strong points in school. How you have a great GPA and you are in upper level courses. They will love to hear about that! Let them know about all of your good qualities and goals for the future. I would apply to a retail store or a restaurant for the summer...something along those lines. Just from experience, I know that they will hire many young students over the summer. And...just to sum this all up..it may take a while to finally stumble upon a job offer. Just be patient and it will come. And..apply to as many places as you can! Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK :)

Where do they plan on applying? If your students are looking for summer jobs at the local YMCA as a lifeguard (for an example) consider calling the director directly and asking for resumes of previous candidates. You can anonymize the resume and show them real work. You might also consider contacting: Walmart Your local library Publix or other local grocery chain

You do need to include the temporary position. A high school student would need to include their skills, accomplishments and activities, volunteer jobs/internships.
Quite frankly, as a 16 year old you probably won't be applying for any jobs that would require a resume.

You should mention about your work in the office- its all experience and you could put the piano playing under hobbies. Remember to mention all your achievement and awards!
