How to force-feed a bird?

Sick pigeon found on the street. It will be hours until the vet who takes in wild animals is open. I did the rice-sock warming thing, and am trying to get some hydrating solution in it (water, sugar and a little salt), according to instructions found on the internet.

But dripping it on it's beak with a syringe just makes it shake it off and go back to sleep. Should I towel it and try to open it's beak? I think that he'd just breathe all the water in.

Any tips?

Never try to force feed a bird, you could end up choking it.

If a birds is sick then it will not feed or drink. it is much better to place water next to it and if it wants to drink it will , Do Not put salt in the water, birds do not take salt in that form and it will only dehydrate it more.

You do know to use a glove when handling wild birds and wash your hands three times with warm soapy water as they can give you an illness. Just give pure water as it will get all the other needed nutrition from the food. Open the beak and put the syringe down past the breathing hole and squeeze a little water in, release the beak.

Take this bird and place it in a cage or box and cover the cage or box do leave foods and water in with the bird so it may eat or drink when it feels ready place the bird in a quit spot in your home or garage or shed any where the bird will be warm dry and safe from people and family pets the poor bird may be in shock or ill or hurt call the vet and have them treat and look at this bird mean while let it alone in peace.Covering calms a bird down since they can;t see any surroundings ....

A sick pigeon may be suffering from disease and it is not healthy for you to handle. Some bird viruses are deadly to humans. Release the animal and nature will resolve the situation. You will probably make a hungry cat very happy.
