How the guilt in The Book Thief help the characters do good is by when the raid happens and Liesel and her family go to a neighbors basement, Max goes upstairs and looks outside through the window for the first time in a few years. Max becomes good because at the ending he survives the Jews being killed and finds Liesel and they hug and both cry. A good ending, really.
