Dry sockets? Is there a "real accurate" safe zone from getting them?

I know this question has been asked to death but everyone says something different? I am a non smoking 46 yr old who is 4.5 days post op from 2 lower non impacted wisdom teeth being extracted with no surgical difficulties. I'm still afraid to eat anything except soft foods for fear of dry sockets, I can see by looking in the mirror that there is still dark black with a tinge of white where the holes are so I assume I'm still safe, plus no pain at all. Is there a definite safe zone or is everything just guesses and speculations? I've heard 3-5 days, 1 week, 2 weeks etc and even 48 hrs post op. I'm doing everything the surgeon says religiously. Thanks!

I would say after 2 weeks you're safe. You're probably safe before that but when it comes to dry socket, better safe than sorry....trust me!! It's excruciating! I got mine 8 days post op. It took 2 weeks to stop hurting!

Dry socket most commonly occurs between 3-5 days of post extraction, but can occur before or after that time. There's no definitive answer since everyone heals at different rates. Just keep doing what you're doing (or not doing) and you should be alright!

If you do get it, you'll know. It's the worst pain you will ever experience, not to mention the foul, putrid smell/taste in your mouth.

You're more likely to dry sockets 3 to 5 days after wisdom teeth are extracted. I made sure not to drink of a straw for a week.

Don't drink from a straw! that will dislodge the clot. I hope you're not spitting a lot cos of the bleeding, that will dislodge it too. Make sure you're not eating on the side you got your teeth pulled, you can pull out the clot/stitches.

2 weeks is a safe bet. I'm a smoker so I knew I was going to heal slow, so I waited 2 weeks. I didn't get dry sockets, yay!

But if you're doing what the surgeon says religiously, then why you asking on yahoo answers? LOL
