Whats the best free DVD decoder? And where do i get it?
So i got a "new" laptop from my uncle. I went to put in a DVD today and i get a window that says Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.
I clicked on "web help" and the decoders they have cost money. I searched for free decoders and theres TONS of them. Im wondering which FREE one is the best? And what site do i go to to get it?

Although there isnt a standalone DVD decoder that is free, there is a free solution. VLC is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
The VLC media player does not need a decoder to play DVDs, so its the best free solution for using a computer DVD player with no DVD decoder software.

Hi, if you follow my instructions in my link below you will be able to play anything with windows media player. If you do not want to do that see the media player links at the bottom inside my link below. You cannot go wrong with any of these players or the codec pack in my link. You will be able to play dvds if you follow the step by step instructions in my link. Or just get vlc player.
I hope this helps, see link below.
