Choral recordings on CD?

I find that with quite a few Choral recordings that I've purchased on CD recently (especially those recorded quite a few years ago) that they seem to have all sorts of problems. They seem (for example) to suffer from something akin to what we used to call "wow and flutter" in the days of vinyl. I want this music to be a pleasure to listen to - is this possible?

I imagine it's quite difficult to record Choral music without having some kind of problems. It's not like you can just pile the choir into a sound booth and get them to sing. they have to be in some sort of cathedral in order to get the acoustics right. I find similar problems when listening to Piano concertos. I was listening to Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C♯ minor one time and heard a few people cough. It was very annoying because it was actually a really good performance.

I think perhaps it would be helpful if you linked your Q via a supplementary to an example of what you find is troubling you, so we can actually hear for ourselves before responding?

Of an age to remember the joys of wow & flutter all too well, I can't say that modern choral recordings in particular have displayed any characteristics that have reminded me of those days so far. Using reproduction equipment that is pretty savage at exposing many an even minor flaw, I would have hoped something of that kind would have twanged an aural nerve of mine by now...

    All the best,

What? What the--? There's lots of excellent, high-quality choral recordings on cd. Do you buy bootleg or something?

What kind of choral music would you like? You don't say. So just picked at random--

    Handel's "Messiah"

    Bach's "Mass in B minor"

    http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Dietrich-Henschel-Chris...

    Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9"

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000001GPY/ref=pd...

    Orff's "Carmina Burana"

I dunno. Maybe I'm just concentrating and listening so intently on the music, I probably don't hear or notice small technical flaws.
