Veterans Day is coming up (Nov 11, 2010). Are you doing anything to celebrate the holiday?

I'm a veteran (U.S. Army) and would love to know what people do to recognize the men and women who've served our country. How many people even know why Nov. 11 is Veterans Day in the U.S.?

There are a few ways I'm planning on celebrating.

The first is by committing to hug the veterans I run into during the week of Veterans Day!

It's an easy way to show your gratitude to those who have fought in wars on behalf of our country.

Secondly I'm trying to help others do the same and also donate to help aid veterans and their families by getting the Hug A Veteran Decal. Check it out:

Also, I found a list from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs that shows where official observance ceremonies are being held on Thursday. I hope to make it to one of the Florida ones!

    Here's the link for that:

Happy Veterans Day! Hug A Veteran!

PS It was mentioned earlier, but Barbecue is definitely on the agenda as well! :)

I am a member of the VFW Auxiliary and every year we join the VFW members in doing a memorial cermony at the local war memorial and place flags on the graves of veterans at the local cemetary. We also do the same on Memorial Day. We also have many veterans who are going to speak to local school kids during this week.

Originally it was called Armistice Day and commemorated the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Later it became Veteran's day to honor veterans from all wars.

No. I would bar be que, but it's too cold to bar be que at this time of the year. I'm just thankful for the veterans' sacrifice for this country.
