Why do people pay fabulous sum of money to buy classical paintings?

I can appreciate the passion for paintings. But I do not understand why rich people pay such fabulous prices for possessing some old paintings, the right place for them is the art galleries. When there is so much hunger and poverty in the world. would not that money spent on antiques be helpful to provide some relief to the needy?

    Investment.

    I'd sooner see the money be spent on art objects than on arms used to kill people in war.
