Brown Algae in fish tank?

I don't know whats up with my fish tank. I have had tanks for over 12 years, and have never had this issue. I have a brown, feathery algae taking over the tank. I replaced the hoses about a month ago and they are already clogged, all of the filter media has a thick layer on it. I have a 200 gallon tank and I am rinsing the media and doing a partial water change once a week to keep the algae to a minimum. Someone suggested leaving the light on more, that it might kill it, but that doesn't seem to be working. The fish do not seem to be impacted. Other than the hose, nothing has changed, no new food, ornaments, treatments etc.

Update:

by the way..it is a fresh water tank

The following is assuming a freshwater tank.

Sounds like brush algae. It is a true pain to get rid of and one of the few that I would recommend using an algae killer on. "Algae destroyer" is the best I've used and is safe for fish and invertebrates.

However, you need to figure out what is causing the algae bloom. Old light bulbs are definitely a cause. Poor water conditions are the obvious cause.

How old are your light bulbs? Also, what's your water change schedule? I've seen local tap water have some major chemistry changes over the course of a year. High nitrates, phosphates, or silicates int he tap can cause algae blooms.

there is many approaches which you will do away with algae Algae is formed via moisture and warmth. in case you have a heater on your tank you may try turning the temperature down. The algae would additionally be forming out of your mild as that produces warmth. a mild on your tank isn't a prefer. you may try lowering the time of your mild. If those nonetheless do no longer artwork you may try getting a fish stated as a Pleco. The algae is nutrition for the pleco and this is a guaranteee that the algae would be long previous very quickly.

sounds like you have either old bulbs or a possible phosphorous problem. if this is a reef system, get some snails, (turbo grazers and astrid's) and keep lighting to a bare minimum. maybe 3 hours a day.. if its a fresh water tank, change the carbon, kill the lights for a week, and siphon the junk off.algae needs light to propagate, darkness will help kill it w/ no adverse effects to the fish.
