Why is the press giving libs a pass on the lies they're spreading about the Fair Tax?

The opposition has painted it as an added tax rather than a tax replacing all federal and income and related taxes. They imply that it will result in everything being more expensive to buy (while the opposite is true), and they ignore that people will take home their entire gross pay to live on while being reimbursed the taxes for all purchases up to an amount adequate to make most necessities tax-free.

If conservatives had tried to perpetrate such a blatant intentional misrepresentation, the media would have eaten them up.

Update:

My intention was not to debate the pros and cons of the Fair Tax. As I've researched it very thoroughly, I already know that it is by far the best option on the table to cure our economic woes. My question was why it is so easy to intentionally misrepresent something like this and suffer virtually no media scrutiny. In fairness, mommnuke makes the valid point that there have been varied proposals on the table; but others have been pretty much eliminated.

I can also see that many of you have fallen for the opposition's hype. Some of you even believe that responsible tax relief decreases tax revenue. How sad.

most press is sensationalized and targeted, so that people will buy into it. Nobody wants to hear the pure truth, they will stop and listen to what grabs their attention. So most news caters to people's fear, and that is the opposition taking over. Hence most news seeming to favor the liberal side of things, and Fox News to counter that. All the stations are owned by the same 3 companies anyways. They have nothing to lose by misrepresenting the truth

Mainly because your interpretation of the Fair Tax is not the only one out there. There are some people advocating adding Fair Tax on top of the income tax. There are some who would not give deductions to make necessities affordable. This article gives a suggestion of how many different opinions are available on just this bill alone.

The current Fair Tax proposal does follow the outlines you suggested, but it is not the only or the first Fair Tax proposal.

I am a "liberal" and am completely in favor of the fair tax with a prebate for the first 30k in goods purchased for all working Americans, and indexed to inflation.

If the prebate is not included in the Fair Tax plan, it is nothing more than a shift of taxes to the poor.

With a prebate, this would likely drop overall tax burdens for most working Americans, it would encourage business, because many businesses would pay no tax at all, and the deficit of those two would be offset by an increased tax basis (more people would likely have jobs), and the fact that all currently nontaxed and illegal income would suddenly be taxed at a much higher rate when its used to buy goods and services.

Actually, everything would be much more expensive under the "fair" tax. The rates would have to drastically increase in order to maintain the same revenue that we currently generate.

The "fair" tax is basically a punishment for being middle or lower class. Those groups spend the greater percentage of their wealth on necessities, compared to the wealthy. The hugely increased prices will be much more of a burden to the middle and lower classes than to the wealthy.

Why do people who tout it neglect to point out that the "Fair" (Ha!) Tax would result in a tax increase on the working class and HUGE tax cuts for the rich??

The media are in the same ideological morass as the liberals, they lie then lie again to cover their lies then blame conservatives for making them lie.

the flat tax is not flat and the fair tax is not fair. Do the research on it.

Please explain to me how it is that adding a large tax to all goods and services makes them cheaper.
