Cable TV Satellites are spaced at 2 degree increments 22,300 miles above the equator.

So you must choose the satellite you want and point your dish toward it.

DirecTV and Dish Network use different satellites for their programming. Their receivers come with a built-in satellite strength meter, Tune the dish to the max signal strength.

As a very general rule in North America all dishes must point in a general Southern direction.

See http://www.lyngsat.com/america.html for specific satellites and their location and the channels on each satellite

For DirecTV or Dish visit their web site and look for dish pointing tools

    for DirecTV here: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/customer/dishPointer...

Depends which satellite and service you are subscibed to and where you are geographically. To generalise dishes will always point Southwards plus or minus 160 degrees or so. See http://www.lyngsat.com/ for details on satellites and their directions.
