Based off this information, which is the best pathologic diagnosis for this patient?

Patient has a throbbing ache on tooth #30. Your clinical exam reveals a large, somewhat corrugated leukoplakic lesion along with a large carious lesion on tooth #30. Patient says the leukoplakic lesion is painful.

Does he have:

a. Nicotinic stomatitis

b. White sponge nevus

c. Aspirin burn

d. Squamous cell carcinoma

e. linea alba

(My inclination is either white sponge nevus or aspirin burn... but I am not sure.)

The answer is aspirin burn because for whatever reason, some patients think that placing an aspirin along the gum of a tooth that is hurting makes the pain go away. If it works at all it is because the patient now suffers from a chemical burn of the gum tissues that hurt more than the toothache. I always tell patients that do this if they have a headache, do they put an aspirin on their head or do they swallow it?

Holistic Health 2010 is almost here! Are you going to this Muslim Health event?

    Where:

    Islamic Centre England

    140 Maida Vale, London, W9 1QB

    When:

    Saturday 13th November 12pm-5pm

    Reasons for attending:

    1. CPR training @ 1 & 5pm

Learn to save someone's life, with professional trainers from the British Heart Foundation. Includes practical work. Other such courses charge, for example a similar activity by the British Red Cross costs over £40, this one is free! Additionally certificates will be issued, a valuable addition to any CV.

    2. Free dental check up (12-5pm)

Let’s face it, trips to the dentist are not cheap! A team of well experienced dentists are offering you a free dental check-up in addition to answering any questions you may have.

    3. Women’s Health (2-4pm)

A station run by a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. This is a very rare opportunity to have a consultation with a specialist at the top of their field to discuss health topics from gynaecological issues to fertility and pregnancy.

This is otherwise very difficult to do without paying extensively for private healthcare, with the additional benefit of discussing with a fellow member of our community who can fully appreciate your background.

    4. Cardiovascular Disease Screening (12-5pm)

This screening circuit is essential, particularity to anyone in our community who are forty and over. High blood pressure is symptomless and is otherwise known as ‘the silent assassin’, unfortunately many people remain undiagnosed. This offers an opportunity to sit down with a doctor, calculate your long-term risk of heart disease and arrive at ways to implement positive changes towards better health.

    There are many more...

Including the life coaching workshop at 3pm, an opportunity to explore the ethos of healthy eating from a fresh new perspective by sister Sidra Zaidi, a well experienced personal development consultant.
