Why don't marine insurers together pay for a force to eradicate maritime piracy?
Piracy on the high seas, especially off the coast of Somalia, has become a scourge threatening human lives and liberty, goods in transit, ships and international trade. The action that any Government's forces can take is limited by political and diplomatic niceties. Surely it is time to take a lesson from history and allow private enterprise to finance a solution as happened in the Caribbean and elsewhere with the use of privateers?
I think piracy has to be eradicated where their bases are - on land, not at sea. Somalia e.g. is a failed and corrupt state which is unable to stop anything - just the place for a bit of free enterprise, like piracy, and anti-piracy too.

Two reasons: Cost, and the Law. Most foreign countries would have a HUGE problem with someone coming within 25 miles of THEIR cost, enforcing USA laws. Plus, it's hugely expensive, and the financial benefit doesn't justify the outlay.
If an insurance company sent a fleet of ships to Somalia from the USA, and started attacking ships they thought were pirate ships, can you just IMAGINE all the ruckus that would cause? Even if they WERE attacking only pirate ships, Somalia would look at it as a declaration of war from the USA! It would be illegal, and stupid, for a private company to do this.
Look. Slavery is still alive and well, in Somalia. We have enough liberals in the USA squawking about how we don't have the right to enforce our morality on the rest of the world, so I think we're just going to have to stop putting ships out that way.

You asked: "...Why don't marine insurers together pay for a force to eradicate maritime piracy?..."
Why pay for a private force when the governments of a number of countries will patrol those waters for free? Besides, a private force couldn't do any better job patrolling such a large area than governments could do.
It's just a huge chunk of the earth that they have to attack from.

Maritime Piracy has been round for hundreds of years. The Barbary Corsairs made a fantastic residing contained in the Mediterranean for a number of centuries till the U.S. and eu Governments despatched in warships to damage their bases and sink their ships. then back, they were not eliminated thoroughly. The Corsairs continually maintained that as they were Muslims, and attacked Christian ships, then it became a range of Jihad. the universal day pirates in Somalia/Punt and the Philippines, can't use this as a reason as they attack any vessel that feels like that is nicely worth taking. in this project, international kin is unnecessary. In Somalia particularly, you've an volatile are without genuine authorities, and what there is, is corrupt and getting a percentage from the pirates. regrettably, it would look that the regulations of engagement want to get replaced. immediately, pirates or those suspected of being pirates may have their boats stopped and searched. If guns are got here upon, then they are confiscated, and the "pirates" given water and resources to get them decrease back to base. in spite of if a significant vessel is attacked by pirates, many times they won't be able to wrestle decrease back by using "regulations" that are in position. what's now necessary is an finished replace. all people suspected of piracy must have their vessel sunk, and they could be landed on the nearest shore, in spite of the position that is, or how hospitable. Pirate ships stuck in an attack could be sunk immediately. Suspected pirate "mom ships" could be boarded even as got here upon, no reason necessary except for the suspicion. If got here upon to be engaged in piracy, the crew could be put in boats, and the numerous vessel sunk. it will be as a lot because the crew to make their personal in the previous to safe practices. In essence, a much more advantageous "difficult line" approach should be taken. those pirates do not care if any crew on the concentrated ships are killed or injured. the same stance could be taken in the route of the pirates. If the Governments whose ships are attacked dealt with the project as an actual "warfare" then the project would nicely be presented below administration. If an attack takes position in global Waters, then the attacker could be at chance of have it is attack terminated "with severe prejudice".

This is happening already. If you type on google about maritime security.
There are hundreds of companies that provide this sort of service. This is an example http://www.mandusc.com/
The problem is that this causes prices of good to increase by a large amount plus the safety of crew members are put at risk in a very serious level.

It's like the drug industry. If they eradicated piracy a big chink of their insurance business would go away. Less income for the insurance company.
Why is it like the drug companies you ask? Because there is no profit in a cure, the profit comes from having a treatment program.
