Can anyone else in Edinburgh hear 'the hum'?
I first became aware of this constant noise about eight months ago. It sounds to me like a diesel engine running at some distance from where I live in South West Edinburgh and I thought for a while it was an electrical generator engine running where some construction work was being done on the site of a decommissioned army barracks not far from where I live. I discovered then, that I seemed to be the only person in my immediate neighbourhood who could actually hear this constant hum and that all work on the barracks site had been completed. The sound seems to get worse during the late afternoon and evening. I have now just discovered that this 'hum' is a recognised phenomenon but one that is for the moment without any explanation whatsoever. I should be most interested to discover if there are any other people who are sensitive to this sound or if there any researchers working on finding an explanation for this phenomenon in my immediate geographical area.
9 AnswersEarth Sciences & Geology8 years agoHas anyone had problems in being paid by Springboard UK survey company.?
This company operates a threshold of £25 which means that if you earn more than that amount by completing their surveys you actually get paid. The problem is that once you get near to this threshold they don't let you get any further so you never get paid for all of the surveys you have actually completed. This was supposed to be a reliable company but now I begin to think it stinks..
3 AnswersOther - Advertising & Marketing9 years agoWhy don't editors nowadays check for mis-spellings, bad grammar and all that editors are supposed to cover?
I'm sick of seeing obvious errors appearing in print in published material. It seems that nobody cares any more and I feel that sort of attitude is insulting to the reader.
4 AnswersMedia & Journalism9 years agoWho is the biggest landowner in The Islamic Republic of Iran?
In the 1970s the then Pahlavi government appropriated large tracts of land from dissident Iranian clerics who had in their turn obtained land by widespread misuse of religious influence, by bribery, embezzlement , and other less savoury forms of corruption.
In Iranian eyes the ownership of land is the only worthwhile indication of wealth.
3 AnswersOther - Politics & Government1 decade agoWhy don't marine insurers together pay for a force to eradicate maritime piracy?
Piracy on the high seas, especially off the coast of Somalia, has become a scourge threatening human lives and liberty, goods in transit, ships and international trade. The action that any Government's forces can take is limited by political and diplomatic niceties. Surely it is time to take a lesson from history and allow private enterprise to finance a solution as happened in the Caribbean and elsewhere with the use of privateers?
6 AnswersInsurance1 decade agoWhy are so many Americans unable to spell?
It has become apparent that even graduates in all disciplines are unable to spell even simple words. One sees national advertisements that are seen by tens of millions of people with spelling errors that nobody seems to question. Even here on Yahoo one of their games is described as a game of "navel strategy". This would be laughable if it was not so serious.
13 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoHas anyone actually missed Jonathan Ross, and how can the BBC be persuaded to drop the overpriced buffoon?
As a pensioner, I object to any part of the licence fee I pay going towards this unpleasant character's outrageous salary and expenses.

People of such importance should not be anonymous. How is the team organized and what functions do they perform?
1 AnswerYahoo Answers1 decade agoIt now seems that all professional American sportsmen (apart from golfers) cheat. Why should this be?
The Mitchell report is only the latest disclosure in a long history of cheating in American so-called sport. The fact that the people mentioned are held up to the young as heroes perhaps explains why American youth drug culture is so strong.
There must be a reason. Does anyone know what it is?
1 AnswerOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoHow do geographers/surveyors determine the true source of major rivers like the Amazon?
Is there some sort of formula? Or is this a judgement between contenders, made by a committee sitting comfortably in some air-conditioned office.
I was a resident of Peru and I know the region of the Upper Amazon. How can anyone determine, in this area, which is the main river and which the tributary stream.
It has just been announced that the Amazon is once again the longest river in the world. How do they know?
I should very much prefer, and be very grateful for, an informed response to my question.
Drivelling, time-wasting, semi-literate morons need not reply although I don't hold out much hope of evading their attentions.
