Why don't editors nowadays check for mis-spellings, bad grammar and all that editors are supposed to cover?

I'm sick of seeing obvious errors appearing in print in published material. It seems that nobody cares any more and I feel that sort of attitude is insulting to the reader.

A major part of this problem is, most dailies have had a couple of layoffs and a couple of buyouts. This means there is something like half the staff is now working as compared to the past. Yet they have to get out the same amount of news, etc. That means there really is not time to do things "right," and there's barely time to do them at all. Yes, management should realize this, but newspaper management was never among the Quiz Kids of management, which is why newspapers are in the terrible shape they are now in. Newspaper management sneered at the Net since it was created -- even now, most don't realize they have missed the last train out of their present predicament. Sad, sad, sad for those of us who like reading news, and for those who have gotten a living out of writing it.

There are proof readers but apparently there is a new breed out there that aren't as bright as back in the old days.

    Misspelling doesn't have a hyphen.
