Getting rid of fleas?

We have 2 dogs and 2 cats. We've lived in the same home for nearly 2 years, never had fleas here until tonight. How can we get rid of the fleas?

First of all, do not flea bathe them...flea baths can cause serious reactions, especially in cats, and bathing will only kill what is on them, it will not give them residual protection. You need to get a good flea prevention from a veterinarian and apply it every single month. The OTC stuff does not work, so don't listen to those that tell you Hartz works just as well as the stuff from the vet--it is super cheap for a reason, and that is because it is crap and can also cause some pretty nasty topical reactions. As far as treating your house, vacuum your carpeting and furniture and dump the vacuum bag or canister contents in the garbage and take it outside, wash all bedding, then treat your house with an approved flea killer (I prefer the sprays), and if you have a yard you need to treat it as well. If you have a significant flea infestation you may even need to call a professional exterminator. It may take several months to get the problem under control, but be patient and don't forget to treat all of your pets in the house every month with the good stuff.

It's going to be a pretty involved process to fully get rid of them. Either take your pets to get a flea bath or give them one yourself (no difference but it's just easier to have someone else bath a cat) and then keep frontline or the like to apply latter to keep the fleas off the pets. Get a fleapowder for your carpet and couches and follow the directions as far as application and then vacuuming it back up. Wash any throw pillows and blankets and your sheets and comforters. I'd do this once a couple of weeks after the initial washing and powdering just to keep them from returning. Try to find products that will kill lthe eggs as well s the larvae and adult fleas. If the situation doesn't change or seems to get worse then I would remove your pets from the home (kennel or a friends/relative's place) and try the use of a bug fogger.

If you have Dog's and Cats, use frontline, most products available for dogs use ingredients that can be toxic to cats. Also, use frontline PLUS since it takes care of eggs and larvae in addition to full grown fleas. You should also NOT BATHE your animals for 72 hours before or after an application of frontline as this doesn't allow the frontline to circulate correctly. You can also buy Carpet and Furniture sprays to kill fleas that may be lingering, they also make 'flea bombs' but you do need to clear out of your house or apartment for about 3-7 hours depending on the brand. Also, Flea collars don't work as well as the industry would like you to believe.

Go to a pet store, they have some nice shampoos specifically geared toward fleas/ticks. Bathe your dog and cats in it. It not only kills the fleas/ticks, but kills the eggs laid by them. Just follow the instructions on the shampoo bottle. Rinse them thoroughly and be sure to brush them out after bathing them. This will aerate their skin and get rid of dead fleas/mites and hair. You should always brush your cats and dogs at least once a week. This will keep their coats clean and healthy. This will also stop your cats from barfing up hair-balls which is caused by dead hair. To give them nice clean shiny health coats, once a week put an egg white with their food. Not the yoke, just the egg white. That is like a treat to them. I hope that I have been of some help to you, your cats and dogs.

Everybody is going to need to get a good flea bath and all of the bedding needs to be washed, then I would suggest you get something like Frontline. You won't see any more fleas in a matter of days. You can only buy it at your vet or a pet store like PetSmart. Don't use cheap replicas because they don't work....you get what you pay for. It can get a little pricey, but you need to get the real thing in order for it to be effective. Frontline works like a charm for me. I haven't seen a single flea in over 2 years.

DO NOT use the Hartz flea drops on your pets!! I have seen many cats and a few dogs come into my clinic with seizures after application of the drops.

Ditto to what new@this said as to get rid of the fleas.

Get advantage or frontline from your vet, and give your animals a flea bath, let them dry, and apply.

or if you can't afford the vet medications, try Hartz flea drops and shampoo. Works just as well. Can be bought at canadian tire, walmart, or zellers.

    Good luck!
