I've spent ages rebreeding this guy. Will he do or should I try for one with better defences/speed.

So far it sounds like it's a pretty good Totodile. You've got the adamant nature going so +att -Spatt, which is good. Just get those physical moves going once he evolves and EV train his attack and speed, you'll get a pretty good Feraligator going.
