What if an aircrew member is a higher rank than the pilot in a military aircraft?
I'm a bit of a plane buff and was wondering what is the protocol for giving orders in a combat aircraft where the RIO, BN, or WSO was a higher rank than the pilot. Take the retired F-14 for example: I'm sure from time to time a newer LT(JG) was assigned to an an aircraft with a more experienced RIO, maybe a LT or LCDR. In such a case, who is the aircraft commander? Could, say a higher ranking WSO in a 2-seat F-18 order a lower ranking pilot to disengage from a dogfight or abort a landing?
A second question: Is it permissible, for a non-aviator to command or be the XO a squadron or detatchment? Has it ever happened in any branch? (not counting USAF Missle Squadrons.)
Thanks in advance!

The Aircraft Commander (pilot in command) is the first, last and final authority. Regardless of rank.
I have flown on many crews, where the Co-pilot outranked the AC. The AC is in charge and has the responsibility of Command.
Even on Airborne Command Post, the Battlestaff commander is a General Officer. The AC may be a Capt, He is in charge of the aircraft and its safe operation and the personnel on-board are his responsibility.

Chain of command. The captain is responsible for the craft. The admiral is in command of the fleet, but not the ship.

the pilot is always the ac commander. the back seater is there to do his job only to help the pilot. the back seater could be a major and the front seater could be a captain and the captain is the pilot and he is in charge.

Rank does not trump billet, for example you can have a private who is a military police officer telling a captain what to do or refusing to take orders from a captain under certain circumstances.
