A question to everyone-Religious Studies in School?
Agnostics,Atheists and Theists of all Faiths alike, which of the following do you think should be taught in schools as part of a Religious Studies Course? Which do you find contentious? Could you also include which continent you live on please?
Please be pragmatic about this atheists, whether you believe in them or not, religions exist, and this is a matter of educating young people well enough for them to make an informed choice.

I think religious studies are crucial to any education. Without knowing about religions we will not understand many things about the world we live in. Religion plays a very big part in many areas of life. Without religious knowledge much of history will not make any sense at all. We will not understand current events like the problems in the Middle East. We will not understand the logic behind laws and ethics that govern our nations.
If students have an objective class in religion, they can understand these things and much more. I would love to stand before a public classroom and present the Christian view. I would also enjoy watching an atheist try to defend what he believes.

i think any of them would be fine. As long as the class isn't promoting one religion over another, I think any information about how religion impacts society, culture, etc is great.
A lot of Atheists feel this way, which is why we generally are more knowledgeable about religion in general than religious people.

I have no objection to an optional course in a private high school to have a class on religions of the world. I do not think it a wise use of public funds in a public high school considering that they are still graduating kids who are functionally illiterate. I took World Religions my first year in Community College. I think it is best there.
I DO think it's reasonable in public school to present a single lesson (history class) each year of junior high and high school that discusses the beliefs of different people as part of our society. I think you would have a lot fewer hate crimes directed towards those who are not christian in the US as a result.

Don't particularly care, as long as it's not from the perspective of a particular religion.

Origin/Philosophy, because those would help me the most in proving the religions fake. I can imagine myself laughing uncontrollably in class.
