Should Carlos Padilla have stopped the 3rd Ali vs Frazier fight in the 13th or 14th round?
Should referee Carlos Padilla have stopped the Thrilla in Manila before Eddie Futch eventually called a halt to the bout at the end of the fourteenth round as Joe couldn't see and was getting nailed by every punch in the book? I have seen Padilla and another referee called Tony Perez letting a few fights go on too long which other referees would have normally stopped ie Padilla should have also stopped the Thomas Hearns vs Roberto Duran and the Mike Tyson vs Pinklon Thomas fights sooner as it was blatantly obvious they were in all sorts of trouble and had absolutely no chance of conquering their opponent. And Tony Perez let a couple of fights go on too long ie Ken Norton vs Gerry Cooney and Ray Mercer vs Tommy Morrison and I am sure their is others. He also made a mistake in the second Ali vs Frazier fight when he stopped the fight when Ali had Frazier in trouble as he fought he had heard the bell.

He had to guide Frazier back to his corner after the brutal punding he took in the 14th. He definitely should stop it if Frazier can't even see his own corner and isn't firing back and isn't defending. I do think fights are stopped early these days, but Frazier gave his all and had nothing left. The ref was being abit of a fan if you get my meaning. Wanting to see an incredible fight continue rather than doing the right thing.

The referee will take account of the whole fight and that it is a world title fight. he will give the fighters every possible opportunity to stay in the fight especially when the fighters are fairly even and have given it their all. Joe Frazier fought fantastically a good ref will know that Joe is a battler and could turn the fight - Ali was also very tired, Joe was still throwing hard hooks, he could have caught Ali and won the fight. These were two of the best fighters ever with scores to settle. I am an Ali fanatic but Joe Frazier was a great boxer and deserved every chance to try to win.
I have a colour print of Ali and Frazier with their original signatures called "THE FIGHT" from the Thrilla in Manilla. Any takers for the right price ??

No. In those days as should still be today, the ref can only stop a fight if any one of the fighters was in danger of being knocked out. Injuries are part and parcel of such violent contact sport as boxing and only if a boxer is groogied and dazed enough from receiving punches he no longer have control of his reflexes and balance that can he be effectively ruled to be in danger of being knocked out and hence the ref has the right to stop the fight.
True, Frazier received numerous punches to the face and head and was severely injured but he proved he could take those punches and there was nothing that told the referee that he was losing or had lost his control over his own reflexes and balance that should prompt the ref to stop
The same situation was true in the Pacquiao-Margarito fight last weekend.
Let's not over-react.
