What would a good dog to adopt?
My boyfriend and I are looking to ADOPT a dog. We want to adopt to A)save a life and B)have a family companion around. We want a LARGER dog that will fit our lifestyle...
I'm home most of the day, except on weekends when I am at drill. He works 10 hours a day, Monday-Saturday. We will be living in a rented home with a yard, and food and supplies won't be a problem. My favorite dogs are the Siberian Husky, and the American Staffordshire Terrier.
We both have moderate experience with dogs, and we would like a playful dog, who can still protect our home.
I will groom the dog as much as needed, like I said, food supplies, and grooming as well will not be a problem.
Our landlord allows any dog with a decided security.
Again we are ADOPTING, so no puppies! We aren't ready for puppies yet! We simply don't have the patience for a puppy right now, so we are going to adopt an adult, or possibly give a senior dog his/her best final years.

I strongly recommend a Boxer...they are one of the greatest companion dogs there are. I currently have two that I adopted from a shelter. However, the best thing to do is visit the shelters, and let your heart tell you which one you want. That will be the perfect dog for you.

1, What dog experience do either of you have?
2. Assuming you have cleared this with your landlord what restrictions if any are you under as far as breed/weight?
3. How much grooming are you two up to?
4. How active of a dog do you want?
5. Favorites should only be factored if they are actually a decent fit for you.

Go and meet some dogs at your local shelter . I would look for an adult mutt . You can get an idea of their personality there, and mutts are generally harder to adopt out . Plus, if you decide on a pit bull type, you might really want to get to know it a little because so many of them have been attack trained.
Myself, I favor German Shepherds . Intelligent, loving, protective of their family without (usually) being vicious. Plus, they "smile" when they're happy to see you , and have the cutest little "beauty mark".

labradors are good friendly lovable dogs.A Siberian husky might be quite hard to train but if you are committed it would be good. If you just like the puppy bit and want to avoid bills then being a puppy walker for guide dogs might fit your criteria. You get a dog for a year they pay for food, vet bills etc and you get to look after a cute puppy for a year! But it is quite hard letting go.Newfoundland's are bundles of fluff which are great for cuddles and golden retrievers are like labradors and are really nice. All in all i think a labrador would be a good choice.

You could try ex-race dogs like whippets/greyhounds, or a great dane. American pit-bulls are a good option because there is so many in animal shelters. However you cannot go wrong with labradors, they are so loving and kind.

American Pit Bull Terrier. :) They have an over abundance of them in shelters, b/c noone wants them :( and.. they are the first to be euthanized, b/c of their reputation. They need love just like any other animal.
