  • DS: Test breeding...?

Now before we get to the fun lets make one thing clear I am NOT, repeat NOT breeding in this situation, this is purely for opinions.

So for those who do/have bred would you ever consider this: Breeding a dog out of your kennel who had failed its OFA for hips, to a dog with a better rating? Both dogs are solid when it comes to drive, work ability, conformation, pedigree etc, the only divergence is the hips scores. None of the pups would go to the GP, just to other working homes/kennels and everyone knows what the deal is and are fully capable of evaluating the pups they get. Both dogs are from lines you've known and bred with for years.

Do you go through with the breeding or do you just scrap the dog from your breeding stock?

  • Anyone have a dog who is scared of cats?

A friend of my roommate's brought his Amer. Bulldog mix over with him today. I can honestly say I have never laughed harder watching a dog and a cat interact. Eris(my p.i.t.a cat) fluffed up a bit when Wrench first came in, but that was really the bulk of it. Wrench on the other hand did his best to keep either 4 ft or more if not a person between him and Eris. once she calmed down, any time she came near him he'd either move if not look away.

She tried to play with his tail, a couple paw pokes, a mock charge and actively stalking him. Followed him when he followed Jen into her room and was pretty much his shadow. Scared him off the couch when she pawed at him from underneath it.

And no we didn't purposely let her antagonize him. Any time she looked like she was up to her usual brand of mischief we called her off, but it was still funny once she figured out she could push the dog around a bit. Mind you Wrench is a rather "soft" dog.

so anyone else have/had or been around a dog who gets that "save me he/she is going to eat my soul" look when a cat is around?

  • Bullies and Weight pull events?

So for anyone here who does weight pull with their APBTs/pit or other breeds have you ever seen anyone with an Am. Bully at the event?

If yes: How well did their dog do? And obviously most are built differently, but how was the dog's actual pulling compared to other dogs who went up?

If no: Do you think there is a reason why you haven't seen any at the pull events you go to?

And to avoid any possible confusion I am not talking about American Bulldogs.

Haven't seen any myself at the events I have been to.

  • Dog Section: Ever have a case of paw in mouth(foot in mouth)?

Apparently today isn't my day with the designer dog set. Just got back from a lil me time at the nail salon. On my way home, ran into one of my neighbors and commented on what a pretty weim mix she had. Her response: (rather put out at that) "He's a purebred SILVER lab!" Me: Oh....................

And earlier today while at Fetch, to pick up a new bag of Arcana, lady comes in with her two "bulldogs". Same thing, minus the weim comment. "They are purebred bullboxers" i might have given her a look that said she'd just grown a second head.

Anyone else have moments like these lately? Wasn't really a foot in mouth situation, but damn if they didn't look at me like how could I not know what I was looking at.

  • Dog breed name question?

Ok I just thought of something so was wondering if anyone else felt/thought the same.

As some of use known people breeding Australian Labradoodles are trying to make this into a real breed - fair enough.

Am I the only one who thinks that maybe just MAYBE if that really is their end goal the "breed's" name should be reflective of the breed itself?

My reasons for why they should drop the whole labradoodle part

    1. honestly whenever I heard doodle anything I think of the old magnad-doodle toy

    2. Labradoodle still gives the impression that the dog is just a lab/poodle mix. It's not. The AL has other breeds, mostly spaniel and CC retriver worked in.

Maybe its just me, but anyone else thinking the same way? If anything call it the Australian Retriever considering all the breeds that have gone into this "breed".

  • Registration Papers & Petshop pups?

Ok can someone answer this for me: Why do people believe that petshop pups can't/don't come with registration papers? This is based on a question from someone else and the answers given.

i'm just curious if people actually believe this. BTW i'm not even talking crap registries like ConKC or even APRI, I mean LEGIT registries like AKC and UKC.

  • Would you buy this dog?

Taking a break from my writing so thought i'd ask another fairly random q.

If you saw this ad would you buy this dog? Why or why not?

Very rare chocolate liver female Shih Tzu, born 6-26-2010. Housebroke, all shots dewormed and has been vet cleared and microchipped. She has had one litter of puppies for us and we feel she would be a better pet than a mommy. She loves to be with humans but does not like mommyhood. She is not snappy or aggressive just doesn't like to nurse and be with her babies, would rather be with her human companions. Very sweet and loving little girl. She has not been around young children much, so we would rather she go to an all adult home as she may be nervous around small kids. Perfect little girl for anyone wanting a nice pet, that still has many years of enjoyment, but does not want to go thru the puppy, housebreaking and teething stage. THIS BABY GIRL WILL COME ALREADY SPAYED, SO NO BREEDERS NEED INQUIRE. SHE WILL BE READY TO GO IN ABOUT 3 WEEKS. If picked up at my home in IN, there will be a sales tax charge of 7%, or I can meet in Harrison OH to avoid that charge.

And for those doing the math yes she was bred under 2 years of age.

  • Since today seems to be dog breeding question day?

time for at least an intelligent question. Or rather several

For those who breed or have bred(and I do mean the responsible ones)

    1. What led to you deciding to get into breeding?

    2. Was your first breeding dog male or female? Why?

    3. Do you ever regret getting into breeding?

    4. Have there been any dogs you've produced that really stood out ?

    5. For those who have retired from breeding, if you had to do it all over again would you change anything?

  • Dog breed clubs : Has anyone else noticed this?

now I know this isn't true for ALL non us breed parent clubs, but has anyone else noticed that when compared to US parent clubs, many foreign breed clubs aren't as detailed as far as the information about the breed, what to look for in a breed, health information goes?

I've noticed this a few times and had to use links from the us club for the same breed to provide information in some of my answers.

Can anyone think of a reason for this? Is it a matter of whomever is in charge of maintaining the site hasn't thought to provide such information to anyone who comes across the site?

  • Dog Section: Thought provoking question of the day?

So this is based on something that was said in a couple different questions on here.

There is no such thing as an reputable breeder. Just like bad breeders they are still in it simply for the money. If the breeder really cares about animals and is breeding for the sake of them, they should be given away for free, to "bless" people with the opportunity of owning a high quality pup without having to pay a lot of money for one. You wouldn't pay for a person so why pay for a day?(paraphrasing, but pretty much what was said)

I know this is rhetorical, but am I the only one who thinks that a load of nonsense? Its not even remotely practical to expect people to put that much time, work, money, blood sweat and tears into something and then just turn around and give it away for free.

i won't even touch the whole people vs dogs part for the fact its been hashed over to death and as we all know, dogs are not people.

  • Dog Section: Happy Monday?

Hope everyone had a good weekend because mine was a complete bust. anyways on to the question of the day.

Mostly to the breeders on here, but even if you don't breed join the fun. How desperate would you have to be to use a stud like this?

-4 years old has been at stud since over 1.

-Has produced around 10 litters with about 60+ pups.

-all the breedings have been to pet bitches and the pups have gone to pet homes for the most part so no real knowledge on how the pups have turned out

-Has half his health clearances done, but they are out of date(thyroid and heart)

    -Is unilaterally cryptorchid

-Has a GREAT pedigree if you skip the first two generations

    -is "a gentle breeder"

-So so conformation in build and color

  • Toy Panda Dogs....WTF!?!?

So last night I was on hoobly looking around and what was being sold locally, out of sheer boredom. I then come across this ad - http://www.hoobly.com/0/0/1950555.html . under that were four ads for "rare breed toy panda" pups.

Of course I had to go look this up and found their website. http://toypandadog.com/

Apparently they are looking for people to join their breeding program. You get a "Free" pup(minus shipping) that you foster for their breeding program. My guess is these are at least spaniel mixes. Hard to say for sure since even after 8-10 years of breeding(their claim) they have not even come close to having consistency as far as looks (click on join our breeders)

Anyways these guys plus the people at the other FOUR toy mutt pages are supposedly producing therapy dogs on the smaller side; well therapy dogs and overpriced toy mutts at 800 and up a pop.

    Now onto the questions

    1. Whats your opinion on this?

    2. Do you think after all the time spent on this "breed" they should have SOME consistency in their breeding dogs?

    3. Do you think most people are joining into this for a cheap do and for the chance to provide therapy dogs without realize just how much work really does go into breeding?

  • Potential Bad breeders being scammed by other bad breeders?

So came across this the other day while reading reports on Ripoff Report. A lady had posted an ad on hoobly looking to purchase several female yorkies. She got a response and after some emails and phone calls, pics and asking if the woman was an "honest' breeder she paid close to $1500 for 4 yorkies - 3 females and 1 parti(a dq in the breed) male.

Of course come each and every promised shipping date there was some excuses to be made or a plea for more money. And of course the poster never got her dogs either.

Isn't it nice to know that bad breeders/scam artists are scummy enough to take advantage of any and all possible competition?

Reading reports though has gotten me to think more on an issues that's be brought up on here - a people REALLY that desperate for a dog that all common sense and reason just goes out the window? Does all it really take is a well dressed website that any kid could put together to impress someone without any real basis for backing up a breeder's claims(titles, lineage health etc)?

And one last q and this is for the breeders on here: have you ever had a buyer, regular joe or another breed, try and pull a fast one on you after buying one of your pups? How did the situation end?

  • Happy Saturday/Sunday Dog section?

How's everyone's weekend been so far? Shoveled the porch and steps here, then my roommate brought me an awesomely huge cup of coffee with a giant marshmallow in it. A great way to start the day considering last night I ended it with looking at my eyelid going goodamnit(cleaning up the bar after our anti valentines night got clocked in the eye accidentally while scrapping paper and fake blood off the floor) got a nice bruise in the works.

Dog related : What's the last rare/uncommon breed you've seen lately? For me because I hadn't seen one in ages was an actual irish Wolfhound. Turns out Danes aren't the only giant breed int he neighborhood. Had a nice conversation with the owner about the dog.

  • I want to breed a Purple spotted dog?

Why should "pit bull" breeders get to have all the fun and corner the market on extra special rare nose/coat colored dogs?

So I was thinking I could take a red leopard Catahoula and breed it with a blue merle and get a whole litter of extra rare and exotic purple leopard Catahoulas. I mean how hard could it be? How much do you think I could get per pup as they will come from a full pedigree of UKC registered dogs so I can have them registered as purple ribbon as well? Do you I think could more if I market them as super hogs dogs who can scent a wild hog as far as the next county over?

Also for a more rich purple color should I go with darker red and blue leopards?

Ok coming back from bizzaro nyquil land

Legit: how's everyone's thursday going? Finally getting over my cold thank god. Was tired of waking up congested to the point I couldn't breath.

And for dog related or rather puppy related - http://www.monaghancatahoulas.com/images/bella_tuf... How adorable is that face?

Also what have you seen in your breed being marketed as "special/rare/exotic" when its not? It can be color, size, imported lines etc.

  • Question about a Dog Rescue?

Ok this is mostly for people who know about the history/rep this place has

Anyways - How the heck is Gentle Giants rescue still in business? I mean honestly amid numerous reports of how filthy the rescue is at different times, the condition many dogs have been sent home in, bait and switch after a specific dog has been paid for, lawsuits against adopters for not feeding GG brand food etc, how are they still in business? I mean besides the fact of who owns/runs this rescue?

  • Saving Heidi when she doesn't need to be saved?

Ok trying this again because YA is being well YA and thus slow

Now before the other regs assume I've lost my mind I am NOT trying to get signatures for Heidi the Doberman. I do have a question on what others opinion on the situation is however.

Here is the petition site so you can read the owner's side of things http://www.saveheidi.com/

Now when this first popped up a few minutes ago I went looking for news articles with more details

    1 http://www.clickondetroit.com/community/Royal-Oak-...

    2 http://www.examiner.com/dogs-in-national/royal-oak...

Now both articles pretty much refute what this woman is saying. There are witnesses who back up the man who was bitten view's of event(he asked before approaching the dogs, vs just randomly went up to them) AND the hospital notes as well as police reports make it clear that this wasn't just a headbutt.

    So my questions

    1. Do you think this woman is just trying to get her way out of one of two fines levied against her since Heidi was also unregistered at the time?

    2. Is it wrong of her to get people all worked up that her dog may be destroyed when there is NO pending order of destruction and the dog is still in her care?

-She can keep her dog if she simply pleads and pays the fine. If she pleads not guilty looses, fails to show to court then yeah obviously the dog will be put down, but they are giving her an out here and she's refusing to take it.

    3. Do you think this gives other online petitions(while equally ineffective for the most part) aimed at saving dogs who really need saving a bad name?

    4. What's your opinion on petitions aimed at saving the life of dogs who have proven to be dangerous? I've seen more than a few and I think the bleeding hearts need to focus on non problem dogs.
