Defragging does not free hard drive space. A file that take up 500 sectors will take up 500 sectors whether they are contiguous or 500 separate sectors all over the hard drive.

But that is not important. If you are using a modern Mac, there is no need to defrag the hard drive.

Defragging a Mac hard drive is a thing of the past because of the way that OS X manages files. After installing system updates or new applications, the computer will optimize itself. There are ways to periodically clean up your computer and defrag a Mac hard drive, but it can take a few hours and may not improve performance significantly.

    1

Open the Disc Utility program, which is located in the "Utilities" folder of your "Applications" directory. Highlight your hard drive from the list and have the program repair the permissions. This is an easy way to correct some common computer errors which could be slowing your hard drive down.

    2

Look for a program to defrag your computer. There are some free utilities that can work on your Mac hard drive, but you should seriously consider purchasing a program because of the stability and support that comes with a purchased product. Defragging programs include Disc Warrior and iDefrag (see Resources below).

    3

Take steps to back up your data before you defrag a Mac hard drive. Data loss is unlikely with well-respected programs, but defragging is a long and extensive process, and you can never be too safe.

    4

Plan to run your defragging program during a time when you won't need to use your computer. No matter which program you decide on, it can take up to several hours to defrag a Mac hard drive. Some companies even suggest running the program overnight.

    5

Notice whether defragging your Mac hard drive improved your computer's performance. Opening applications and large files should be faster if only by a few seconds. If your hard drive is more than 75 percent full, the performance increase may be more noticeable.

in case you come from the residing house windows consumer community, you could desire to think of your Mac will perk up in case you defrag thepersistent. it quite is fairly much in no way mandatory on any Mac with one exception: very final shrink professional for modifying video clips (a funky thousand greenbacks in case you probably did no longer get it unfastened like I did whilst working for Apple) could tutor some more desirable performace on IDE drives in the event that they're defragged occassionally. SCSI drives are extra useful optimized for video so as that they could in no way % defragging. finding a SCSIpersistent greater than 72 GB is slightly a chore, despite if. I as quickly as had Norton approaches that secure a defrag device for Mac OS9 and older yet i've got no longer used it in years by way of fact it did no longer replace any parameter of overall performance and took too long. in case you certainly have some decreased overall performance on a Mac in customary every day use, it is not susceptible to be concerning to fragmentation. look someplace else for the respond.

defarg has nothing to do with freeing up space on ur HD, defraging ur hard drive being the file back up front for faster access, u need to uninstall some programs u don't use r need, lot of time ur computer wil come with a lot programs on it that u don't use or need, go to add & remove & look & see what's in there u don't use or want & click remove, they are partition mover's out there, ur mac might have one on it.:)

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com/

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
