Organising / set up for photo exhibition?

OK I would best ask by listing , sort of contemplating holding an exhibition of photo / artwork ,

1 ) what is the normal procedure to exhibit , 2 ) does it have to be a them or a thought out mix / EG :colour / B&W , landscape , nature , wildlife , etc , 3 ) what is best size to print / display , mount and or board , 4 ) rough cost ? 5 ) price to sell work perhaps ? 6 ) entry charge or free entry / provide beverages for launch ? 6 ) best method of advertising the event ? there are loads more just thinking a year or so down the line , any comments / advice welcome , thanks in advance

    Find somewhere to host your exhibition, the easiest is to take part in an exhibition that's already been organised with other artists, rather than setting up your own.

    Get your best work framed (and mounted). Do it yourself to keep costs down. Arrange your work by style - e.g. landscapes together.

    Whatever you do, don't charge an entry fee - because unless you are really famous, people will not want to pay. Ideally you want your sales to cover any costs.

    Try a selection of different sizes, from small to larger. Sell the smaller prints cheaper. Charge whatever you think they are worth, and don't forget to include the costs of framing/mounting or any commission you have to pay to the organisers.

    To add. Sell prints as limited edition rather than open. It increases the percieved value. Also, don't expect a financial profit from this. Exhibitions rarely make a profit. Get a good mailing list for invites to the private view (this can be difficult) - ideally a good gallery should be able to help with this. Most sales are made at the private view. Use only high quality printing processes (either giclee or lambda). Don't underestimate the amount of time it takes to frame and mount photographs - this is slow. Selling price will depend on your reputation and the reputation of the gallery. Go for a walk around a gallery to get a feel for what other people charge bearing in mind their existing reputation or otherwise. Yes, exhibitions should have a coherent theme. It has to hold together as a body of work if you are going to look credible in the eyes of a collector. Print size - whatever you like bearing in mind it has to be good quality.
